Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

VoIP Update: Yahoo! Buys DialPad
Yahoo! Users Will Soon Be Able to Place Calls Over the Internet

"We still need to integrate the technology and roll out a product, and we haven't disclosed those details," Yahoo Inc company spokeswoman Joanna Stevens told the Associated Press earlier this week, as Yahoo announced its acquisition of DialPad Communications, whose VoIP technology converts conversations into data packets that can then be transmitted across the Internet using today's widely prevalent broadband connections.

The 6-year old company has more than 14 million users. It is expected to serve as Yahoo's newest springboard into the world of VoIP.

"As of June 14th, Dialpad and Yahoo have joined forces," reads the laconic announcement at the very top of the Dialpad web site this morning.

In a Q&A at the site, the company states:

"Since our inception back in 1999, Dialpad has always strived to offer low cost, high quality Internet telephony service to users around the world. Yahoo! will leverage Dialpad's IP based services to further build upon its voice services as a core component of Yahoo!'s Communications Products as well as across the Yahoo! network. Both companies are excited about working together and combining our strengths in order to better take advantage of the fast growing IP telephony market and build a range of exciting new services."
