Sybase Announces Support for Android
It will help developers and product managers incorporate Bluetooth capabilities into Android devices

Sybase iAnywhere today announced a new version of its iAnywhere® Blue SDK (Software Developer Kit) that will help developers and product managers incorporate Bluetooth® capabilities into Android devices. With the underlying Bluetooth functionality running on a Linux based 2.6.x kernel, the Sybase iAnywhere Blue SDK provides necessary application layer support for developers to effectively add increased wireless flexibility to the rich Android framework.

“Sybase remains dedicated to building on its extensive device support and enhancing Bluetooth technology through the Bluetooth Special Interest Group,” said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director, Bluetooth SIG. “Sybase customers can use the new Sybase iAnywhere Blue SDK with confidence knowing that the software has passed Bluetooth qualification and rigorous testing at interoperability test events.”

Sybase iAnywhere Blue SDK for Android extends the Android platform by strengthening it with industry standard application profiles, including: Handsfree (HFP), Advanced Audio Distribution (A2DP), A/V Remote Control (AVRCP), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Object Push Protocol (OPP), SIM Access (SAP), Phone Book Access (PBAP), Message Access Profile (MAP), Human Interface (HID), Basic Printing (BPP) and Basic Imaging (BIP).

“We are extremely pleased to add the Android framework to our growing list of Bluetooth ported products and continue building out our extensive device support strategy for Sybase’s customer and partner ecosystem,” said Terry Stepien, president, Sybase iAnywhere. “As Bluetooth functionality continues to gain popularity in the telematics and consumer electronics marketplace, developers require an extremely effective way to extend those features to various wireless platforms, including Android. Our commercial Bluetooth stack is extremely reliable with more qualified application profiles for Android than any other market solution and we offer a high level of technical support for those customers that require it.”

Android developers gain the following benefits of using up-to-date profiles on Sybase iAnywhere’s qualified Bluetooth compliant v2.1 +EDR stack:

  • Rich functionality through a flexible architecture that eliminates lock-in with a specific Bluetooth chip vendor
  • Faster time-to-market and increased return-on-investment by reducing development costs and testing cycles
  • Proven expertise from Sybase iAnywhere’s extensive experience working in wireless networking protocols and through hundreds of design wins representing tens of millions of enabled products in the market
  • Business-to-Business Technical support and full product documentation enable easy integration into the Android framework
  • Loyal, longstanding and large customer base of OEMs that ensure the highest quality code is written to specification with industry proven reliability, functionality and portability
