Google Latitude Hits the iPhone
Put Yourself on the Map!
Jul. 27, 2009 11:45 AM
Love the thought or loathe the thought, Google Latitude is now available for the iPhone in US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and I'm sure that those folks worried about privacy will be in the latter group.
Good news is that it is an opt in service and levels of privacy can be regulated...From the Google Latitude privacy menu, you can choose to:
- Detect and share your location automatically*
- Set your location manually
- Hide your location from all friends
* You can also share only a city-level location with certain friends
Google latitude runs in the iPhone's Safari Browser and can be saved as a Bookmark onto the iPhone's desktop. So updates to your location, via the iPhone, will only happen when that webpage is opened on the device (as there are no user background tasks in the iPhoneOS). Updating schemes are different for other supported devices such as Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Android etc.

To try Google Latitude, type google.com/latitude into your iPhone's browser
