Java was a big reason Oracle outbid IBM for Sun

Oracle said late Thursday that its $7.4 billion acquisition of Sun was okay with the Justice Department. That leaves the European Commission, which has until September 3 to decide whether it’s going to give the deal a green light too or launch a Phase II investigation that would ruin Oracle’s plans to close the acquisition by the end of this month. A Phase II investigation could take three months. The EC has been poking around both Java and MySQL. Maybe it’s heard those rumors about Oracle gonna starve MySQL, the rival open source database Sun bought.
Java was a big reason Oracle outbid IBM for Sun. That and the chance to turn Sun hardware into Oracle appliances. The longer the delay the better IBM and HP’s chances of poaching Sun customers. Oracle agreed to buy Sun in April. Reader Feedback: Page 1 of 1
