Intel Corporation today introduced the dual-core Intel Pentium D
processor-based platform for entry-level servers that includes two processor
cores in one processor and the corresponding Intel E7230 chipset. Intel has said it will bring "highly
competitive pricing" into this area, aiming the platform at smaller businesses
wishing to buy powerful entry-level servers. The Intel E7230 chipset starts at $36 each based on quantities of 1,000
units. Intel says its new platform includes many
unique and innovate enterprise-class features such as PCI Express* I/O, 64-bit
addressability, DDR2 memory and software RAID. Today's introduction follows previous announcements about the availability of dual-core processors for Intel-based desktops and workstations. The company says this is the first in what will be an extensive family of Intel-based dual-core server products shipping later this year and in 2006.
