Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

Cloud Computing Is Two Things: Encapsulation and Abstraction
Barry X Lynn presents a general session at the First Annual Government IT Conference & Expo

"Cloud Computing is two things: encapsulation and abstraction," noted Barry X Lynn, Chairman and CEO of 3Tera, at the First Annual Government IT Conference & Expo. That is the main thing to remember he emphasized.

There are three questions you should ask about Cloud Computing: What is Cloud Computing? Why do we need Cloud Computing? How should we use Cloud Computing?

What is Cloud Computing? There are numerous definitions, Lynn noted.  After providing several definitions of Cloud Computing, including Wikipedia's, Gartner Group's, and the U.S. State Department of Commerce, he then provided 3Tera's definition - encapsulating applications into single entities and then abstracting them

Why do we need Cloud Computing? You should use Cloud Computing because it provides a reduction of CapEx. There are also operational savings. In many companies now you can find one administrator managing numerous servers, which is a big savings

Time-to-value is one reason why you need cloud computing. If you don't have to configure hardware, time-to-value decreases 80 percent.

How should we use Cloud Computing? First you have to understand the principles. Virtualizing VMs is not the answer, he said. If you encapsulate an application, then the platform knows all about the application. You should also take great pains to run Cloud Computing right.

3Tera's product, AppLogic, starts with a basic computing process and also has a patented process called ADL. Once an application is encapsulated, you have the ability to scale out applications and not pay for stuff that you are not using. You can also implement one application at a time and it doesn't entail redoing the IT infrastructure.

Cloud Computing is the future of information technology, Lynn noted. When you are doing Cloud Computing right, it doesn't entail redoing the IT infrastructure. He ended with this final thought - think about Cloud Computing not as a destination but as a journey. Think about new ways that you can use Cloud Computing.

The 4th International Cloud Computing Expo is co-located at the Santa Clara Convention Center with the 7th International Virtualization Conference & Expo.

DAY ONE KEYNOTE - November 2, 2009
The Time is Right for Enterprise Cloud Computing
by Richard Marcello, President of Systems & Technology, Unisys

Up to now you may have been reluctant to move your Enterprise application workloads to the cloud, fearing a lack of security in the cloud, compliance issues such as data location regulations and having to rewrite your applications. During his keynote, Rich Marcello will discuss the latest technologies and approaches that help knock down these barriers, creating the opportunity for attendees to now consider cloud managed services as part of their data center journey to secure "IT as a Service".

DAY TWO KEYNOTE: November 3, 2009
Cloud Computing Services at the Scale of the Internet
by Shelton Shugar, SVP Cloud Computing at Yahoo!

Yahoo! Cloud Services store and deliver web content, personalize content for consumers, optimize Ad selection and placement, improve search results, provide scalable virtual computing environments, and process and store enormous amounts of data to improve consumer experiences and drive innovation. This keynote will elaborate on how Yahoo! and consumers benefit from the Yahoo! Cloud Services that are in production today supporting web-serving properties and data processing environments.

DAY THREE KEYNOTE: November 4, 2009
Cloud Computing: Separating Hype from Reality
by Richard Sarwal, SVP of Development for Oracle Enterprise Manager

Enterprises large and small are drawn by the advantages of cloud computing - pay-for-use, self-service, elastic scalability tegration, compliance, lock-in, and long term costs of public clouds. Private clouds for the exclusive use of one enterprise can mitigate these concerns by giving the enterprise greater control. This keynote will explore how enterprises are likely to adopt public and private cloud computing, building on a foundation of virtualization infrastructure and management systems
