Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

Symbian Adds Two New Handsets To Its Range in Japan
NTT DoCoMo has launched the FOMA M1000 and FOMA F700iS based on the advanced Symbian OS

Symbian Ltd. today announced that NTT DoCoMo has launched the FOMA™ M1000 and FOMA™ F700iS based on the advanced, open, standard operating system -Symbian OS.

The FOMA™ M1000, manufactured by Motorola for NTT DoCoMo’s 3G FOMA network, is the fourth Symbian OS-enabled phone from Motorola and uses UIQ, the user interface from UIQ Technology. The M1000 is the first Motorola phone specified for NTT DoCoMo and is the world’s first-ever WLAN-integrated W-CDMA and GSM/GPRS dual-mode 3G phone.

Aimed at the business market, the M1000 is compatible with international mobile networks including W-CDMA, GSM and GPRS networks as well as public wireless LANs. It provides POP and IMAP email capability and allows users to open and view Microsoft® Word, Microsoft® Excel, Microsoft® PowerPoint, Adobe PDF and other file attachments. Users also have the ability to operate multiple email accounts.

FOMA M1000 offers the business user full access to the internet through the Opera 7.5 browser. A subscription to business mopera allows M1000 users to connect remotely to their company intranet.

The handset is also Bluetooth-enabled and contains Personal Information Manager (PIM) software and a large capacity memory providing the flexibility to add applications.

FOMA M1000 is now available in Japan.

The NTT DoCoMo FOMA™ F700iS, which was launched on July 21, 2005, is based on the advanced, open, standard operating system - Symbian OS. The FOMA F700iS is manufactured by Fujitsu Limited.

This increases the total number of Symbian OS-based mobile phones launched in Japan to 14. Symbian OS brings higher quality mobile phones with better features quickly to consumers, expanding the 3G cell phone market even further.

Last May the board of Symbian appointed Nigel Clifford to the post of Chief Executive Officer. Mr Clifford will took up his position in June 2005.

Mr Clifford has wide experience of successful leadership across a number of sectors, including the technology sector. Mr Clifford was appointed Chief Executive of Tertio Telecoms Ltd in July 2000. Tertio Telecoms is an international telecoms software product and services company backed by Apax Partners, Advent International and GE Equity. Mr Clifford led the sale of Tertio Telecoms to Evolving Systems Inc. in November 2004. Tertio Telecoms develops and markets software-based solutions that improve the roll-out, management and billing of voice and data services for fixed, cable and mobile operators. Customers include Hutchison Global (“3”), T-Mobile, Telenor, Telewest and Vodafone Group.

Before Tertio Telecoms, Mr Clifford spent two years as Senior Vice President, Service Delivery with international telecommunications company Cable & Wireless, serving on the company’s United Kingdom Board. Mr Clifford successfully led a 2,000 person organisation, managed a capital program of more than £200m and was responsible for delivering all customers’ orders to, from and in the United Kingdom.

Mr Clifford spent five years from 1992 as Chief Executive of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary University National Health Service Trust, one of the UK’s largest hospital trusts, employing more than 5,000 staff in five city centre hospitals to provide the city of Glasgow with the full range of general and specialist medical services.

Prior to 1992 Mr Clifford spent eleven years with British Telecom, most latterly as Head of Business Strategy and Market Development for British Telecom’s Mobile Communications business unit, and before that as Senior Strategist in the Chairman's office.

Mr Clifford is a graduate of Cambridge University and holds an MBA from Strathclyde University.
