The Baidu.com IPO Has Officially Opened the Search Era

ABSTRACTED SUMMARY By now we’ve all heard of baidu.com, the Chinese search company that made a spectacular Wall Street debut this past week. Baidu.com is positioned as a search company, and search is clearly the single hottest aspect of the technology industry today. Search will target both consumers and business, and it is actually very difficult to define its apotheosis. Sure, it will be helpful to be able to search all file types—audio and video and all that—but at which point will search be completely redefined? And not for nothing, will the iconic nature of the Chinese language lend any advantages to search researchers at baidu.com? The Search Era is officially upon us.
