In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. Progress Software Appoints John Bates as CTO
As Head of Corporate Development, Dr. Bates is now responsible for four key areas including SaaS and Cloud Computing deployments

Progress Session at Cloud Expo

Progress Software announced the appointment of Dr. John Bates as the company’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Head of Corporate Development.

The company offers a comprehensive portfolio of best-in-class infrastructure software spanning event-driven visibility and real-time response, open integration, data access and integration, and application development and deployment – all supporting on-premises and SaaS and Cloud Computing deployments.

As Progress Software’s Corporate CTO and Head of Corporate Development, Dr. Bates is now responsible for four key areas:

1. Creating and evolving Progress business strategies,

2. Acquiring companies to support Progress’ business strategies,

3. Evangelizing Progress’ strategy and solutions to the company’s customers, partners and other constituencies, and

4. Driving product synergies across the company to support Progress’ strategy to deliver solutions of the highest value and quality to the company’s customers.

Dr. Bates is a recognized visionary and entrepreneur in the software industry, and has a strong track record of innovation in areas such as Event-Driven Architectures, Smart Environments, and Business Activity Monitoring.

In particular, Dr. Bates is recognized as one of the foremost driving forces behind the emergence of Complex Event processing (CEP) and has pioneered the commercial use of event processing applications in business solutions that empower Operational Responsiveness, including capital markets trading, risk and compliance, telecommunications, fraud prevention, smart logistics and many more.

Richard D. Reidy, president and chief executive officer, Progress Software, said: “Over the past few months, we have been redefining Progress Software’s business strategy to focus on key growth opportunities in the enterprise software market. In particular, we are focused on delivering to our customers’ industry-leading solutions, which are powered by new capabilities in business event processing, data services, and business transaction management. This means having the right product portfolio and acquisition strategy. In achieving this goal, John Bates’ leadership will be critical. Having worked closely with John Bates, there’s no one who understands these needs better.”

In his prior role as General Manager of the Apama Division at Progress Software, Dr. Bates managed the sales, marketing, product development and consulting organizations. Through his leadership, the

Progress Apama platform has become the recognized leader in Complex Event Processing solutions as noted by independent market research firms, IDC and Forrester*. Apama customers include financial institutions like JP Morgan and Deutsche Bank, regulators like the UK Financial Services Authority (FSA) and telecommunications providers, like 3Italia.

Dr. Bates’ achievements in Capital Markets have been widely noted, including in 2008 “Institutional Investor” named him one of the 30 most influential people in the financial services industry for his industry-changing innovations.

Dr. Bates said: “We are focused on aggressively bringing new solutions to market that enable enterprises to achieve the highest level of business performance, which we call ‘Operational Responsiveness’. I am excited to be taking on this new and challenging role to help take Progress Software to the next level.”

Prior to Progress Software, Dr. Bates was the co-founder, president and CTO of Apama, which was acquired by Progress Software in April 2005. He led the Apama technology and go-to-market strategy and was co-inventor of patented technology. Before Apama, Dr. Bates was a tenured academic at Cambridge University, England, where he directed the research into distributed computing systems.
