We've looked at slow PostgreSQL queries causing problems and have not been able to find an issue. We've also tested for the case where the PostgreSQL server is down and have not been able to create an issue. We therefor...

Oracle Powers 100 Terabyte Data Warehouse - the World's Largest Commercial Database
Winter Corporation Survey Results Show that Oracle is the Only Database Vendor to Produce Leading Customer Results on Linux, UNI

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Oracle today announced that Oracle powers the world's largest commercial database, according to the Winter Corporation 2005 TopTen(TM) Program. The customer database is a 100 terabyte (TB) data warehouse, and is more than triple the size of the world's largest database (29.2 TB) in the previous TopTen Program (November 2003), which was also powered by Oracle.

Overall, Oracle customers run four of the world's top 10 largest decision support system (DSS) databases. Oracle also powers nine of the world's top 10 UNIX online transaction processing (OLTP) database implementations and eight of the world's top 10 Most Rows/Records for the OLTP UNIX categories. In addition, the survey determined that the world's largest transaction processing system on UNIX runs Oracle(R) Database, with more than 16 TB of data. Three of the 10 largest UNIX data warehouses run Oracle.

This year's survey marks the first time that the Linux operating system had its own categories for DSS and OLTP. In total, 12 systems (eight DSS and four OLTP systems) running Linux were measured -- all of them running Oracle Database. Two of these Linux data warehouse systems cracked the TopTen All Environments in the database size category. The world's largest Linux data warehouse measures 24.8 TB, good enough for sixth overall in the top 10 largest data warehouse category. Oracle is the only database vendor whose customers posted top results on Linux, UNIX and Windows platforms.

"This year's Winter TopTen Program results clearly highlight Oracle Database as the industry's only database that meets the full range of business needs at the largest scale for both transaction processing and data warehousing," said Andy Mendelsohn, senior vice president of Database Server Technologies, Oracle. "We're also pleased at the strong showing of Linux in this program. In a short amount of time, this low-cost platform has proven it can support the most demanding commercial requirements. Oracle continues to meet our customers' requirement to run their databases on any operating system and hardware platform they choose."

Winter surveyed Oracle customers from 20 countries on five continents, in 11 industries from government to healthcare to retail to telecommunications, among others. In all, Oracle customers made up 58 percent (102 of 175) of the validated Winter TopTen Program participants.

"We are pleased to recognize the achievements of individuals and enterprises that advance practices at or beyond the frontiers in large scale data management systems," said Richard Winter, president of Winter Corporation. "The contributions of Oracle and its customers in making the TopTen Program successful are greatly appreciated."

Measuring the World's Largest Databases

The Winter TopTen Program identifies the world's leading database implementations based on Database Size and Workload. As part of the rigorous survey process, respondents must have a validated database that meets the survey's requirements. All customer respondents were required to complete the Winter TopTen Program survey and validate their entry by running the SQL Validation Script against their production system. Any commercial implementation with a minimum of one TB of data for on any platform was eligible to participate in the program. Winter Corporation defines database size as user data plus indices.

What about the 600TB Data Warehouse (non-Oracle) at a famous american retailer? or the 120TB Data Warehouse (non-Oracle again) of a large Telco in the US? I don't know how you guys can claim that Oracle has the largest DWs without really being aware of these two large commercial DWs I just mentioned.
