Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

Find Out How Secure Homeland Security Stocks Are

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/03/10 -- Historically, security was relatively simple: keep someone, or something out, or keep someone or something in. Today, the worldwide definition of security has become pro-active and so wide with new security needs emerging every day and therefore a slew of new companies continuously offering new solutions. None or no one country is exempt when it comes to security threats. "Security no longer is a compartmentalized issue and instead is thriving on consolidating different functions," stated Mathew Collier Head Analyst of www.rothmanresearch.com

A recent report that has been offered to members of www.Rothmanresearch.com, also shows that security used to be a secretive business, typically government related departments, or agencies were involved with funding or promoting certain security technologies. Today, that is very different and the private sector is funding many of those new companies, whilst government R&D funding continues to flow to universities and think tanks. It is also clear that the government can no longer alone provide all security needs, and as a result we are seeing more and more public-private partnerships like ActivIdentity Corp (NASDAQ: ACTI) and Acorn Energy (NASDAQ: ACFN); the government sets the standards and private industry implements the commercialization.

An in-depth report was done by leading research firm RothmanResearch.com, which showed the exponential growth curve of ActivIdentity Corporation, and Acorn Energy Inc. They're growing roughly 45-50 percent a year, and they're going on laptops and cell phones. You have already seen the first cell phones with fingerprint sensors last year.

Homeland security has been a front-burner issue for over 9 years now. It's been a bonanza for many publicly traded companies involved in protecting Americans from terror and crime. Nowhere has the attention been more apparent than in the equity markets. Many of the top performing stocks since 2001 have been Homeland Security related opportunities. The team at Rothman Research has provided a list of the top performing equities and corresponding research reports that can be downloaded for free by signing up to www.rothmanresearch.com

Just before the new year, ActivIdentity Corporation announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire CoreStreet, a provider of distributed identity credential validation solutions for $20 million. The acquisition, which is expected to be completed this month, is primarily cash a cash transaction, but will also include stocks and warrants.

According to Grant Evans, chairman and chief executive officer of ActivIdentity, the acquisition will strengthen ActivIdentity's authentication and credential management product portfolio as well as its foothold in the U.S. market, specifically in the U.S. government sector.

Shortly before the new year, DSIT Solutions Ltd., a subsidiary of Acorn Energy Inc., announced recently the successful completion and delivery of Stage I (out of two stages) of the Dolphin Submarine Tactical Trainer project for the Israeli Navy. The simulator allows the Dolphin tactical team of officers and operators to practice on shore in an environment that duplicates that of an actual submarine at sea.

More good news, at least for investors: As the security business grows, so does the probability that smaller players eventually will be bought out, maybe at juicy prices.

Homeland Security has roughly 225,000 employees and a current budget of $55 billion, which has climbed from $19.5 billion in 2002.

To quickly sum up, we are all vulnerable to all kinds of security threats and hundreds of companies are engaged in the effort to enhance our security. This again, is good news for investors as there will always be a need for these types of companies.
