Moving up the stack to PaaS and SaaS the use of virtualisation may, as you say, be less required if you put lots of smarts into your software. A lot of software does not have those smarts and by utalising virtualisation of the layers below can manipulate existing software architectures to have more cloudy attributes through automation (eg run load balancers and deploy more servers automagically). Over time, as new investment in software at...

SUSE Linux Co-Founder and Kernel Team Member Hubert Mantel Quits Novell
"This Is No Longer the Company I Founded 13 years Ago," Mantel Says

In an e-mail apparently sent on Tuesday to a SUSE mailing list, Hubert Mantel - SUSE Linux co-founder and a member of the Linux Kernel team - wrote: "I just decided to leave SUSE/Novell." The news has caused concern among commentators and analysts, who are naturally wondering whether this means Novell's commitment to Linux is in some way diminished.

Novell insists it will be business as usual for SUSE LINUX, but it would seem that Mantel has perhaps gone in response to a possible internal power struggle between the two open source camps in its Provo, Utah, headquarters: the SUSE team on the one hand and the team behind Ximian, led by the charismatic Miguel de Icaza and Nat Friedman, on the other.

Novell acquired SUSE in January 2004, having already bought Ximian in August 2003.
