State Museum of Pennsylvania Announces December Highlights

HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The State Museum of Pennsylvania today announced its program schedule for December 2012:

Pennsylvania Watercolor Society's 33rd Annual International Juried Exhibition:  This exhibition features the top 120 paintings chosen from nearly 600 entries. It includes works from the United States, Hong Kong, India and Canada. Paintings by Watercolor Society founding member Nicholas Ruggieri will also be on display. They were recently donated to The State Museum's permanent collection by the Patriot-News. The exhibit is on display through Feb. 3, 2013.

Special Art Exhibit:"Where there is Light" is a multi-disciplinary exhibit organized by the Susquehanna Art Museum, featuring photographs by Kevyn Bashore, sculpture and painting by Freiman Stoltzfus and glass sculptures by Through the Fire Glass Studio, Aspen Glass Studio and Katherman Glass Studio. The exhibit is on display through Feb. 15, 2013.

DOSHI Gallery: The Susquehanna Art Museum is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its DOSHI Gallery of Contemporary Art with the art exhibit, "Forty is the New Forever" on display at The State Museum through Dec. 9, 2012. The DOSHI Gallery provides a venue for emerging and established Pennsylvania artists to exhibit their work, explore new ideas, and develop a dialogue between the museum and the community.

"Third in the Burg" Gives Back: The State Museum is participating in the "Third in the Burg Gives Back" food drive benefitting the Ecumenical Food Pantry based at Messiah Lutheran Church. For four decades, the Ecumenical Food Pantry has been providing food to help meet the emergency needs of people in the greater Harrisburg area. The State Museum will be accepting donations of canned goods and non-perishable food items through Thursday, Dec. 20. Each person donating an item to the food drive will receive a discount coupon to The State Museum Store as a thank-you for their contributions.  

"Third in the Burg" is a partnership of galleries and businesses celebrating local artists and their work on the third Friday of each month.

Kwanzaa & Christmas Celebration:  Nathaniel Gadsden's Writers Wordshop, in partnership with American Literacy Corp., Ksongz, Inc., and Life Esteem, Inc., will present its annual festival on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A community celebration of the family, the event will feature music, food, workshops and much more. Admission is free.

Noon Year's Eve:  The State Museum welcomes the New Year with its annual Noon Year's Eve celebration for young children and their families on Thursday, Dec. 27, 10 a.m. to noon. An opportunity for kids to enjoy their own special way of "ringing in the New Year," the celebration features dancing, crafts, and snacks topped off by the museum's famous firefly drop in Memorial Hall at noon. Free with museum admission. 

The State Planetarium: Bigger, Brighter, Bolder! The State Museum premieres its exciting and newly-upgraded "Planetarium XD," featuring the latest state-of-the-art technology. New shows through Dec. 30 include:

"Legends of the Night Sky:  Perseus & Andromeda" (pre-K to grade 2)
A fun-filled retelling of the age-old myth of the Princess Andromeda and the Greek hero, Perseus, will be shown Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 11 a.m.; Saturdays, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.; Sundays, 1 p.m.

"We are Astronomers" (grade 4 and up) This program provides an amazing look at the global collaboration, technology, and dedication required to answer the unresolved questions of the universe. Showtimes are Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, at noon; Saturdays, noon and 2 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m.

Planetarium shows are $2 per person, in addition to general admission; free to State Museum Affiliate Members.

The State Museum Store: The State Museum Store is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Purchases support the ongoing educational mission of The State Museum of Pennsylvania.
