NEW YORK, Dec. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In a write-up featured on MedPage Today, results of a new study have suggested adults who stayed active through moderate exercise like walking were more likely to have healthy hearts. The creators of the mobility device called The Hurry Cane™ commented on this wonderful news.
According to the article, the study included 2,933 adults aged 65 and older living in four separate communities across the United States. It was conducted as part of a larger Cardiovascular Health initiative. At the end of the study, researchers observed exercise appeared to help these older individuals ward off heart failure by protecting against the early stages of damage.
The article quoted Dr. Christopher R. deFilippi of the University of Maryland. He was noted as indicating physically active adults were up to 70 percent less likely to experience cardiac injury than those who lived sedentary lifestyles.
The makers of The Hurry Cane™ commented on the study via a statement to the press: "Time and again we have seen studies that demonstrate the importance of exercise to ongoing health. We developed The Hurry Cane™ as a mobility solution to aid persons in achieving an active lifestyle. It is our hope that by using The Hurry Cane™, older adults can experience the many health benefits associated with walking.
The longitudinal study was observational in nature. Subsequently, causality could not be confirmed but correlations were noted by researchers. The article noted researchers also suggested the self-reported physical activity and walking paces recorded by participants was a limitation of the study. This aspect may have led to an underestimation of beneficial effects.
Based on the results, further studies with controls and quantitative measures may follow. The article noted researchers went on record as stating, "At present, the totality of evidence from observational studies and randomized, controlled trials suggests that exercise is good for the heart, even in the elderly." This is good news for current walkers and may encourage others to take up the activity.
The Hurry Cane™ is the latest innovation in mobility solutions for senior citizens and those who have difficulty walking.
