Patients who view an interactive online program that walks them through what to expect during a hospital stay give their hospital higher HCAHPS scores, according to research being presented at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s 24th Annual National Forum on Quality Improvement in Health Care. The data will be presented as part of the 2012 Storyboard Display at the IHI Forum, held Dec. 9-12 in Orlando.
The program, created by Emmi Solutions, uses voice, image and text to walk patients through what to expect during a hospital stay, including what “quiet” means and expectations around cleanliness, staff responsiveness and medication communication. The program also defines the patients’ role and teaches them how to communicate their needs.
“It helps manage expectations and prepare patients to engage with their health care providers when they have concerns, which goes a long way toward making patients more comfortable with their hospital stay,” says Devin Gross, CEO of Emmi Solutions. As a result, HCAHPS Top Box scores improved across the board for patients who viewed the program as compared to those who did not. Notably:
Emmi Solutions will also be hosting a special interest breakfast on Wednesday, December 12 from 7-8 am EST. The discussion will be facilitated by Emmi Solutions Co-founder Jordan Dolin and will focus on how hospitals can use technology to bridge the gap between hospitals, payers and patients.
The Storyboard Display will be open for viewing on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012 from 4:30-6:30 pm EST in Cypress 1.
