LAS VEGAS, NV -- (Marketwire) -- 02/11/13 -- Con-way Freight, a less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier and subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), today announced that professional driver sales representative James "Jackpot" Sutfin surpassed the career milestone of three million consecutive, accident-free miles. Sutfin, a long-time resident of Las Vegas, is the first of Con-way's 15,000 drivers nationwide to reach this safe-driving achievement. "At Con-way Freight, safety is non-negotiable and is our company's most important principle," said Greg Lehmkuhl, president of Con-way Freight. "James Sutfin epitomizes the skill, dedication to safety and professionalism our drivers bring to work every day. We are thrilled to recognize this rare accomplishment." To put the accomplishment into perspective, three million miles is the equivalent to traveling 120 times around the world, six round-trips to the moon, or 714,285 trips down the Las Vegas Strip. "I'm really proud to hit the three million mile mark to show the younger drivers it can be done," said Sutfin. "When you're driving over 2,770 miles a week, you have close calls almost every day. You just have to be constantly aware of what's around you, and always leave enough space between you and other vehicles so you have time to respond. To have gone this many miles and this many years without an accident really means something to me." Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, in a certificate of recognition commemorating Mr. Sutfin's achievement, said, "I commend your time with Con-way as a professional truck driver, driving triple trailers, and thank you for your safety and professionalism." On his journey to three million accident-free miles, Sutfin became Con-way's first driver in Nevada to pilot triple-trailer combinations in 1986. He reached 1 million safe driving miles in October 1995 and crossed the 2 million mile threshold eight years later. Over the course of his 3 million miles, he has hauled an estimated 350,000,000 lbs. of freight. A Vietnam veteran honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, Sutfin has driven for Con-way Freight for 28 years. He was among the first drivers hired at Con-way's Las Vegas operation in 1983. It is one of Con-way's 11 founding service centers. Over the company's 29-year history, Con-way Freight also has seen 204 of its drivers surpass 2 million safe driving miles, while 1,639 have achieved 1 million safe driving miles. "No matter how many miles you drive, we can all can be accident free and reach our goal of Zero Fatalities," says Trooper Loy Hixson of the Nevada Highway Patrol.
