DBA Software, provider of manufacturing (MRP) solutions for small business, announced that its decision two years ago to base its flagship product, DBA Manufacturing Next-Generation, on the Firebird open-source SQL database has been an unqualified success.
"MySQL gets all the publicity when it comes to open-source databases," said Michael Hart, President of DBA Software, "but based on our experience, Firebird deserves a share of the limelight. MySQL is great for the Internet, but Firebird is perfectly suited for software applications such as our manufacturing package. It has a small footprint, is easy to install, requires no administration, and is fast, stable, and secure."
The Firebird name is relatively new, but its core technology evolved over 20 years with the InterBase database, a version of which was released as open-source by Borland Software Corporation in 2000. Starting with that initial code set, Firebird was developed and is maintained by the Firebird Project, a group of volunteers devoted to what they call "the database for the new millennium."
"Several years ago, when we set out to create our next-generation product, market trends dictated that we go with an SQL database," continued Hart. "But because our target market is small manufacturing companies, which are price sensitive and don’t employ in-house IT personnel, we wanted to find something a little simpler and less costly than SQL Server. In 2003, we discovered Firebird just after version 1.0 was released, and it met all our requirements. A year and half later, we upgraded to version 1.5 without hitches of any kind."
"Firebird supports triggers and stored procedures, which we use extensively throughout our application," said Fred Zumwalt, DBA’s Programming Manager. "Our development staff has worked with most popular databases, including SQL Server, Oracle, Pervasive, and X-Base, and we find that Firebird provides all the functionality we could ask for."
"Our free single-user system, which anyone can download from our Website, is testimony to Firebird’s ease of installation," continued Zumwalt. "Over the past 18 months, more than 10,000 companies have downloaded and successfully installed our manufacturing software without any support assistance."
