In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

IBM To Discuss Many "Things" at Cloud Expo
A Wide Variety of Speakers to be Present

Each major technology vendor sees the Internet of Things in a slightly different way. For IBM, the IoT is taking us down the path to the Smart Home, Smart Grid, and Smart Cities. The company promises that the IoT "by combining technology with societal interests...will change business models, technology investments, consumer experiences, and everyday life."

More prosaically, IBM notes that the IoT "helps enable proactive data access from any connected device." The company will have a major presence and several speakers at the upcoming @thingsexpo in New York, part of the overall Cloud Expo June 10-12 at the Javits Center.

Last week, I briefly outlined the upcoming talks from Dr. Kristof Kloeckner and Mac Devine. Now I'll take a quick peek at two more IBM speakers, James Kobielus, Boden Russell, and Nick O'Leary.

Big Data & Things
James Kobielus serves as IBM's big data evangelist, as program director for big data analytics product marketing, and as editor-in-chief of IBM Data Magazine. He spearheads IBM's thought leadership activities in Big Data, Hadoop, enterprise data warehousing, advanced analytics, and cognitive computing.

Oh yeah, and he's also into the IoT. "Security is critical to IoT adoption because we want to make sure we can trust the sensors, actuators, rules engines and other connected componentry we embed in every element of our existence," he says. "Bringing this down to earth is as easy as pointing out that people's smartphones, tablets, wearable devices, appliances, entertainment centers and home security systems are all becoming IoT-connected endpoints. How vulnerable will you be to security vulnerabilities and privacy violations from any and all of these?"

James will present his talk, "Big Data's Potential in Securing the Internet of Things," at 2:50pm on Wednesday, June 11.

Linux Containers
Boden Russell is an Advisory Software Engineer, IBM Global Technology Services. In this position, he "develops innovative cutting edge services and solutions" for IBM's Global Technology Services - Advanced Cloud Solutions team. His current focus areas include nextgen Proof of Concepts and SoftLayer integration engagements.

His topic will be "Linux Containers-NextGen Virtualization for the Cloud."

OK, it's not strictly an IoT speech, and I shouldn't imply that it is. But it is easy enough to draw a straight line from pioneering virtualization efforts that begat cloud computing, that enabled Big Data, which will be driving the IoT.

Boden asks the question, "Do you want VM agility with near bare metal performance? How about millisecond provision/stop/start/restart times? Looking to achieve greater VM density on your hardware assets, or provision applications without worry of dependency hell? Look no further than nextgen virtualization with Linux Containers."

His session will be presented at 2:10pm on Thursday, June 12 and will take an overview of Linux container underpinnings, throttling, monitoring, tooling/commoditization, images, security, use cases, pros/cons and why containers are poised as "the next VM" in the modern Cloud era.

Node-Red
Nick O'Leary is an Emerging Technology Specialist at IBM where, as he says, he gets to do interesting things with interesting technologies and also play with toys.

With a background in pervasive messaging, he is a developer on the Eclipse Paho project and sits on the OASIS MQTT Technical Committee. He is the creator of Node-RED, an open source tool for wiring the Internet of Things

Nick notes, "The Internet of Things is not a single choice of technology, approach or philosophy. Its very existence is the bringing together of multiple platforms, products and protocols, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts."

"One of the challenges of IoT is to make it as easy as possible to allow developers to make things, for play or profit, serious or whimsical, professional or hobbyist. Node-RED is an open-source visual tool for wiring the Internet of Things. Built on top of node.js, it provides a light-weight, browser-based editor that makes it easy to integrate different streams of both physical and digital events."

He will present his session at 4:00pm on Tuesday, June 10. The session introduces Node-RED, demonstrates what it can do and how it can be easily extended.
