Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

Java Web Services, by Dave Chappell and Tyler Jewell, Coming in March Special 20% Prepublication Discount to WSJ-IN Readers

(Bedford, MA) - The new book coauthored by David Chappell, vice president and chief technology evangelist for Sonic Software, and Tyler Jewell, director, Technical Evangelism at BEA Systems, Inc., shows developers how the promise of Web services can become a reality. Published by O'Reilly & Associates, Java Web Services will be available in March 2002 in bookstores, on the Web and at Sonic Software's JavaOne booth. A sample chapter from the book is available for preview on Sonic Software's Web site: www.sonicsoftware.com/JAWS.

O'Reilly is offering a special 20% discount for Java Developer's Journal Industry Newsletter subscribers for the upcoming book Java Web Services. Just go to: http://oreilly.com/catalog/javawebserv/ and use promotional code # E1EW39. The offer expires April 15, 2002.

Java Web Services gives the experienced Java developer a view into the XML-based Web services world. The book examines key Web services standards, such as Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), Web Service Description Language (WSDL), and Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI), and the roles they play in providing a foundation for industry-accepted interoperability among applications and services in a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Yet standards by themselves don't solve problems without having real implementations to support them. Java Web Services takes a broad look at a number of the emerging Java-based approaches for working with Web services.

The chapter now available for preview, "SOAP - Cornerstone of Interoperability," takes a no-nonsense look at one of the key standards defining the move to Web services.

David Chappell is vice president and chief technology evangelist for Sonic Software. He has over 18 years of industry experience building software tools and infrastructure for application developers, spanning all aspects of R&D, sales, marketing and support services. David has a broad cross-platform background in designing and developing Internet based middleware and distributed object systems across a wide range of technologies including C++, Java, DCOM, CORBA, and EJB. David's experience also includes development of client/server infrastructure, graphical user interfaces, language interpreters and various utility libraries. David has presented technical topics at numerous speaking engagements, and was most recently a keynote speaker at SYS-CON's Web Services Edge 2001.

His articles have also been published in XML-Journal, Java Developer's Journal and Web Services Journal. David serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of SYS-CON's Web Services Journal.
