"Using CA's Advantage Gen for Enterprise Servers (Advantage Gen), we have been able to help customers generate EJBs and deliver J2EE solutions 10 times faster than with other development methods," said Jay Wiener, president and CEO of CorTechs, Inc., a provider of quality assurance test automation software and services.
Advantage Gen 6.5 is a solution designed to speed development of J2EE applications and Web services on mainframe and UNIX environments. Through automatic generation of EJBs for back-end servers, it enables corporate development teams to quickly create J2EE applications. XML proxy support enables deployment of Web services solutions built on new and existing legacy and distributed applications.
By separating business rules from specific technologies and platforms, Advantage Gen 6.5 enables customers to generate multiple business applications from the same underlying model as they add J2EE and Web services systems to their existing environments. EJBs generated by Advantage Gen 6.5 can interoperate with EJBs created from other sources to construct a business solution. A common staging area enables the final assembly and automatic deployment of EJBs.
CA reports that upcoming releases of Advantage Gen will include support for .NET.

I have been using Advantage Gen for14 years. It has evolved and progessed tremendously. We find it to be the most comprehensive,integrated development tool on the market. Our methodology and the use of Advantage Gen does produce phenomenal quality and productivity. Just a word of caution, the tool by itself does not produce the results. Knowing HOW to develop systems is still the critical factor.

I am now working with Advantage:Gen for 8 month and I am really enthousiastic. Advantage Gen has a solid base in client/server applications. Java is one of the possible intemediate languages generated so is C/C++. The really big thing here is the overall consistency in the generated objects. So, except from focussing on things that matter (e.g. business logic) during development, there is the reduction in test time and amount of errors found. We have been a long time user of COOL:Gen (as Advantage Gen used to be called), and we succesfully tested the new code generation options.

It's too bad that many people don't accept the fact that tools that accelerate app development and modification allow/require you to build apps at a much "higher level" then bits and bytes. If you have proper planning, analysis, and such you realize great speed, savings, and consistency. If you are stuck in the art of "fixing our business during coding", all you have is an expensive code-editor. Also, tools such as Advantge Gen really do help insulate you from "tool-de-jour" syndrome; for this I refer you all to the Nov 19, '02 issue of "Midrange Journal", not an Advantage Gen specific article, but still apropos.

Too bad the uninformed react out of emotion or fear, rather than determine if there may be truth in such claims and determine how to leverage it for their own benefit. Having been an IEF/COOL:Gen/Advantage:Gen developer on and off for the past 12 years, I can tell you there are significant productivity gains in using this tool over hand-coding 3GL or scripts into editors or IDEs. 10 times? Maybe not. 2-3 times, definitely! Or, use less resources to develop the same functionality as is done by hand. Don't listen to reactionaries. Find out for yourself.

With all these hypes and marketing, mgmt will push developers to develop J2EE in 1/10th of time, and they will burn out 10 times faster!

10 times faster development? ROFMAO! This sort of totally unsubstantiated claim for expensive tools must have cost our industry billions in losses already. Why do managers fall for this sort of hype?
This is not news at all; it is simply an advertisement. And the main reason why I do not and will not subscribe to any Sys-Con publication. These publications should be distributed free, as they must already be completely supported by this biased sort of "news" and other ads.
Our team recently put our high-priced J2EE IDE into the trash and started using a low-cost Java editor and open source tools. And we ARE in fact going 10 times faster than before. Rate of development has a lot to do with automating tasks, and there are plenty of good open source tools, such as Ant, XDoclet, JUnit, to speed you up. We have automatic EJB generation, packaging and deployment, too. Don't waste money on hyped do-everything tools. You'll be sorry.
