Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

GlobalTek Solutions: Small, Successful, and Led by a 15-year-old CEO

Shazad A. Mohamed is president and CEO of GlobalTek Solutions Inc., a dynamic, forward-thinking company delivering innovative applications and services for businesses and a provider of customer-centric e-business solutions. Shazad is a results-oriented individual, whose business philosophy is to establish and maintain long-term mutually beneficial business relationships with all his clients. He personally oversees all projects to ensure that they are successfully developed, tested, and deployed.

But he also needs his dad to drive him to call on clients, because at age 15 he's too young to drive. His father also cosigns legal documents, since Shazad's signature is not yet legally binding. Shazad founded GlobalTek Solutions at age 12, and his first clients were friends and family. Today, at 15, he is one of the youngest CEO's in the industry. He has won numerous awards including the President's Award for Educational Excellence for Outstanding Academic Achievement for two consecutive years from the President of the United States, as well as the National I-STAR Award.

Shazad commented for WSJ-IN on GlobalTek's approaches to e-business solutions: "XML and Microsoft related technologies (.NET, COM+, ASP) are the two primary focus areas that we've concentrated on. We've done an extensive amount of work with them in the past, and continue to heavily utilize them. Java is definitely an area that we're investigating, especially since we're noticing increased customer demand in the area. We've begun to ramp up our internal Java developer infrastructure however; we haven't done an extensive amount of work with it as yet. Our work so far has mainly concentrated on developing prototype applications such as wireless calendars, email, etc. in combination with XML."

GlobalTek Solutions strives to help corporations develop cost-effective, rich, reliable, and powerful enterprise e-business applications that evolve with their organization. GlobalTek believes that delivering custom solutions built around the organization's business allows companies to focus on their core competencies and have internal and external applications work around their organization, instead of the opposite. GlobalTek assists corporations with Web development, content management, mobile development, sales force automation, B2B marketplaces, user personalization, data management solutions, strategic consulting, and information portals. With solutions built on open, proven, industry standards such as XML, GlobalTek promises to deliver world-class custom development solutions.

GlobalTek's 16 full-time and contract employees, aged 15 to mid-30's, live mostly in Dallas and San Diego and telecommute: there are no offices. Low operating costs have helped keep GlobalTek profitable despite recent economic downturns. Shazad plans to double his staff in the near future to keep up with growing business demands. Revenues last year were in the five to six figure range, and Shazad projects 2002 revenues to be in the millions. "We utilize our own solutions extensively within the organization," comments Shazad. " Our own internal enterprise applications have allowed us to dramatically increase productivity, cut costs, and continue to be an agile organization."

Shazad maintains a GPA of 4.0, speaks five languages, and has an intuitive feel and understanding of Internet business and its direction. He currently studies with a private tutor. Shazad hopes to attend Harvard for his MBA and law degree, and has been corresponding with the president of Harvard since age 11. He also devotes time to community service, offering training in computer literacy.

Shazad Mohamed believes that, "In the final analysis it is the collective knowledge of our team that allows us to deliver optimum results. Therefore we believe it is essential that an organization must have an environment that is conducive to creativity, growth and development." The company is run by a 15-year-old. That in itself seems pretty impressive to me. They seem to be doing well, and with this economy if your making any money your ahead of most people. $1 million+ a year in revenue is pretty respectable for a small dev. shop.

The way I figure it, they're running at a revenue rate of about $7K per head. That's not too impressive, even these days. Please don't waste our time.

this company listed 6 clients, only 3 has links. they have no central offices and probraly most of the 15 employees
are on retainer/1099. Frankly I don't beleive the 4-6 figure earnings claimed because the web business has seen big web developement firm goes belly up,
it's a fickled market where the lowest
bidder wins. The company has more
news links about themselves than clients
links and that is a telltale sign
