News Desk IBM Frees Web Services Patents
It says it is foreswearing enforcement of a bunch of patents it holds that might be necessary to implement 150 standards

It says it is granting "universal and perpetual access" to the IP to both commercial and open source developers, distributors, manufacturers and their users so long as the adopters aren't suing anybody - not just IBM - over any patented technology needed to implement the standards. Previously, all adopters of these specifications and protocols had to get royalty-free licensing terms from IBM. IBM figures it's the largest endowment of its kind and will discourage litigation. The standards at issue are controlled by W3C and OASIS and pertain to Web Services and the OpenDocument Format (ODF) stuff like SAML, XML, SOAP, UDDI, WSDL and the WS-* crew.
