Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

Business Objects' Crystal Reports for WebLogic Workshop
Crystal Reports within easy reach of BEA WebLogic Workshop developers

Crystal Reports for BEA WebLogic Workshop integrates Crystal Reports' Java report processing and rendering capabilities with BEA WebLogic Workshop's JavaServer Page (JSP) development environment. It allows you to quickly and simply embed Crystal Reports within JSP applications, minimizing tedious hand coding of dynamic application data presentation.

A recent independent study of professional Java developers indicates that nearly 50 percent of Java developers are hand coding the reporting component of their application in JSP, a task that occupies over one-third of their time. Developing reports for custom applications is too often left to the latter stages of a project-an afterthought that contributes to project slippage. Based on a recent study completed by Ensemble Systems ("Integrating Crystal Reports with a J2EE Application: A Case Study"), the hand-coding approach to embedded reporting is problematic:

  • Query optimization is difficult since queries must be dynamically altered, based on multiple report settings.
  • The implementation effort for reports with grouped data is prohibitive.
  • There is no practical way to rapidly prototype reports for cases where the requirements are unclear or unstable, effectively discouraging experimentation and leading to reports that do not adequately meet customer requirements.
  • Maintenance of reports is time consuming, as schemas change and new application features are introduced.
  • Customization of the presentation layer for printed output is time consuming.

The successful adoption of an application development initiative is dependent on its ability to expose actionable information to an end-user population. Recognizing that embedding reporting capability is a critical part of every application development initiative, BEA selected Crystal Reports as the only Java reporting solution shipping in the box. The integration with the WebLogic page flow paradigm accelerates the process of accessing, formatting, and integrating application data within JSPs, which provides a fast and easy alternative to hand coding the reporting aspect of a J2EE application.

"BEA is on a mission to reduce the cost and complexity of routine J2EE development tasks, and embedding reporting into applications in an important, routine task," said Byron Sebastian, vice president and general manager, BEA WebLogic Workshop and BEA WebLogic Portal. "We're bringing to Java what developers on other platforms have enjoyed for years - an easier way to help embed reporting into applications built with BEA WebLogic Platform 8.1."

Java Page Flow (JPF) is a BEA innovation for visually assembling Web applications with pages, actions, forms, and navigation. An implementation of the struts Model-View-Controller framework, JPFs are standard Java classes with annotations that declare Web application functionality to the WebLogic Workshop 8.1 run-time framework. Page flows control all the major features of a Web application: how users navigate from page to page, state management, sessions, user requests, and now with Crystal Reports for BEA WebLogic Workshop, embedded reports within Web applications (see Figure).

Business Objects is the world's leading business intelligence (BI) software company. Business Objects enables organizations to track, understand, and manage enterprise performance. The company's solutions leverage the information that is stored in an array of corporate databases, enterprise resource planning (ERP), and customer relationship management (CRM) systems.
