John Swainson, head of the IBM WebSphere division, has been named Big Blue's top software sales executive, replacing Donn Atkins. Tivoli general manager Robert LeBlanc has become general manager of the WebSphere organization in his place. Atkins becomes general manager of IBM's global Business Partner organization, a $30 billion business. Al Zollar succeeds LeBlanc as general manager of IBM's Tivoli software group. An IBM spokesperson has downplayed today the changes, denying they have any great significance, although industry commentators have been quick to link the moves with the flat performance of IBM's software group last quarter. WebSphere remains the lynch-pin of IBM's on-demand operating environment strategy. In his recent exclusive interview with JDJ, Swainson pointed out that "IBM offers 63 industry-tailored software solutions spanning 12 industries. And every one of those 63 solutions is based on WebSphere." It will now fall to LeBlanc as new head of the IBM WebSphere division to execute on the company's bold plan to advance the software giant's leadership in things like grid and autonomic computing, security, systems management, application development, and SOAs.
