Sun Release Server Upgrade With Java Development Kit For J2EE

The first upgrade in almost two years, Sun Microsystems has released its latest version of the company's application server. This offering from Sun is something developers have been longing for, Java-centric developers in particular. Sun has included a Java 2 software development kit (SDK) for Enterprise Edition (J2EE). This SDK sets the tone for Java uniformity in Web Services environments. Some technical bang with this kit includes Web Services-Interoperability (WS-I), Java Server Faces (JSF) application program interfaces and full support for the J2EE 1.4 standard. Sun claims the release will use 50 percent less server space; an ideal accommodation for systems running on older systems. This version is backwards compatible will earlier releases, and migration of applications from other platforms is also possible. The SDK can be downloaded free from Sun. Developers can also package the 35MB application and distribute it, OEM fashion, with their own software. A full range of platforms are supported, including Sun's Solaris 9 (x86 and SPARC), Sun Java desktop system, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 2.1 and 3.0, and Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000/XP.
