"MSBlast.B" Creator Faces 18 to 37 Months in Prison

According to US attorney John McKay, the 19-year-old Minneapolis man who pleaded guilty yesterday to being the author of the MSBlast-B worm infected more than 48,000 PCs last summer.

The attorneys defending the man, Jeffrey L. Parson, dispute that figure - but McKay will press for as serious a sentence as he can, saying that since the damage to individual computer users is very real, the penalties should also be very real.

Parson, who was arrested last August, is scheduled to be sentenced in Seattle before U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman on November 12. He faces 18 - 37 months in prison for "intentionally causing damage to a networked computer" and could in addition face a stiff monetary penalty.
