"Notification was given on February 15 to those employees within Sun's Software organization whose jobs are being eliminated as a result of Software's prioritization and cost reduction efforts," said Sun spokeswoman Stephanie Von Allmen to Wolfgang Gruener of Tom's Hardware Guide, in response to his asking about how perhaps as many as 2,000 people worldwide within Sun's Software organization seem to have been cut from the payroll. Von Allmen told Gruener the layoffs were planned and came as a result of streamlining efforts. She noted that Sun's commitment to Linux on the server remains firm "when a customer asks for it." She also reminded him of Sun's commitment to Linux on the desktop with the Sun Java Desktop System. Solaris 10, it seems, has now once and for all taken Linux's place on Sun's priority list.
