Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

WebLogic Server 8.1 Sets New Performance Records
BEA Leads Industry in Java Performance Benchmark Records

BEA WebLogic Server 8.1 has set new performance records, topping previous results in the dual-node performance category using the industry- standard SPECjAppServer2002 benchmark.

This independently designed and validated industry-standard benchmark measures the performance of application servers running typical business applications. The benchmark is specifically designed to test J2EE in a standard platform for development of portable, scalable, multi-tier enterprise applications.

The new BEA SPECjAppServer2002 records include:

  • Fastest performance of any 4-CPU system in the dual-node category. Running BEA WebLogic Server 8.1 and BEA WebLogic JRockit 1.4.2 on an Intel® Itanium® 2 processor-based HP Integrity rx4640 server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux delivers 1710.23 TOPS@DualNode with a price-to-performance ratio of only $115.72 USD/TOPS@DualNode.
  • Fastest performance in the dual-node category. BEA WebLogic Server 8.1 on Sun Fire(TM) E6900 servers with UltraSPARC IV 1.2GHz processors running Solaris, delivers 4220.39 Total Operations Per Second (TOPS@DualNode) and 834.98 $/TOPS@DualNode. BEA WebLogic running Solaris holds the top result; delivering more than twice the performance of the nearest closest competitor in this category.

BEA continues to provide the very best combination of price and performance available to J2EE-enabled enterprises. Since the establishment of the SPECjAppServer benchmark, BEA has consistently held top scores in both the dual-node and multi-node categories," said Ed Whelan, Director, Engineering, BEA Systems. "The quality of our technology continues to drive the industry forward and provide customers with the most sophisticated J2EE platforms available."

The new records clearly illustrate an ongoing commitment from BEA and its partners to providing performance and total-cost-of-ownership (TCO) advantages for customers, Whelan explained.

Spanning the years, BEA has achieved world-record performance benchmarks on a wide variety of hardware, operating systems and databases, including: systems from HP, Dell, Sun and others; HP-UX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows operating systems; processors varying from PA-RISC to Intel-based 32- bit and 64-bit to Solaris; and a range of databases including Oracle, Microsoft SQL, and MySQL.
