Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. RedSky Releases Next-Generation E-911 Manager for Organizations Seeking Effective 911 Protection for Workers and Visitors
Enterprise E-911 Solution for VoIP Deployments Now Won't Shortchange Worker Safety and Liability

CHICAGO, April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Organizations with large phone systems running on IP networks can now reliably protect employees and visitors with the same level of 911 security they receive at home thanks to RedSky Technologies' new E-911 Manager with Network Discovery. E-911 Manager addresses the critical need organizations are facing to automatically update precise location information in "real-time", even down to the desktop. With the new Network Discovery feature, people using moveable "plug-and-play" IP phones, will be protected with accurate location information.

E-911 compatibility is required by law in 12 states and could become a national mandate from the FCC, especially as IP telephony becomes more pervasive. IP-based phone systems take advantage of an organization's data network to efficiently handle voice calls and offer organizations new features and benefits. However, this emerging technology has typically included technical and administrative limitations that make it difficult to provide accurate location information for a 911 caller. Without this critical information, emergency responders aren't always able to quickly locate those needing help.

"Workers don't need to be less protected and organizations don't need to risk increased liability simply because they want the potential economic and operating benefits of IP phone systems," said Anthony Maier, president and CEO of RedSky Technologies. "E-911 Manager with Network Discovery extends our industry-leading E-911 automation and centralized management capabilities to enterprise systems with digital, analog or IP phones.

"Administrators of large, complex phone systems say they want a reliable multi-functional tool to streamline the management of E-911. E-911 Manager is that tool."

Maier observed that blending traditional and IP-based technologies into enterprise-wide communications systems is a complex task requiring advanced telecommunications and information technology expertise. Managing E-911 location identification for all types of phones, while critical to providing effective 911 protection, can be a time-consuming, administrative challenge.

The latest version of E-911 Manager has been completely re-architected using open standards and Microsoft's .NET platform to work with call servers, traditional PBXs, network switches, and phones provided by a range of vendors.

The software enables organizations to automatically maintain a database of the precise location of each phone in the system -- whether they use traditional or IP-based phone equipment. This information typically includes the office and phone number, the correct building address, and the location on the floor. When workers change locations -- whether permanently or just for a day -- E-911 Manager automatically updates this location information without requiring an administrator to manually update the database. As a result, 911 dispatchers have precise and accurate location information in the event of an emergency call to 911, increasing the likelihood of a safe and successful crisis response.
