Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

Leading XML Security and Networking Vendor Adds Support for SPARC Platforms to Family of Products to Help Secure, Simplify and Scale XML and SOA Deployments
Layer 7 Technologies Announces Support for Solaris 10 on SPARC

Layer 7 Technologies announced its XML Firewall and XML Networking Gateway software products support the Solaris 10 Operating System (OS) running on SPARC platforms from Sun Microsystems. Layer 7 is the only XML security and networking vendor to offer server software for Solaris 10 OS running on SPARC and x86 platforms through an upgradeable family of XML appliances for Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) and Web 2.0 applications.

For customers with processor-intensive SOA and Web 2.0 applications, Layer 7 introduced support for Solaris 10 OS on SPARC to further the scalability, density and performance offerings by Sun’s SPARC Enterprise Servers. Many of Layer 7’s customers use SPARC-based platforms for high-volume data center applications making SPARC technology their first choice for SOA and XML applications.

“To meet the growing demand for enterprise SOA and Web 2.0 deployments, Sun and Layer 7 are expanding their initiatives to accommodate large scale and diverse audiences,” said Juan Carlos Soto, Vice President of Market Development, Sun Microsystems. “As these initiatives change to meet customer requirements, we are positioned to meet these demands effectively by offering flexible governance on the open source Solaris OS for both SPARC-based and x86-based servers; a platform known for running some of the world’s largest data centers.”

As the use of XML data, Web services and SOA increases within the enterprise, customers require robust support for both existing and future enterprise infrastructure. Today, Layer 7 customers use software-based versions of SecureSpan to deploy highly scalable and cost-effective solutions for XML security and application-oriented networking in the data center.

The SecureSpan XML Firewall provides advanced identity and message level SOA security for cross-domain, B2B and portal applications, while the SecureSpan XML Networking Gateway adds support for complex SOA message routing, mediation, virtualization and Service Level Agreements. In addition to gateway software Layer 7 also offers a family of turnkey, hardware-accelerated XML appliances ideal for the data center.

“We recognize that a ‘one size fits all’ approach simply does not work for enterprise SOA implementations,” said Phil Walston, Vice President Product Management, Layer 7 Technologies. “Adding SPARC to the SecureSpan’s broad array of supported platforms, operating systems and form factors gives our customers increased ability to tailor their architecture to their exact needs. This is critical for those experiencing or anticipating exceptionally high levels of activity.”

Support for SPARC platforms is offered in both the SecureSpan XML Firewall and SecureSpan XML Networking Gateway and is now generally available.
