Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

Linpus Launches Its Unique Dual-Mode User Interface Linux Operating System
New Linpus Release

Linpus Technologies will be demonstrating its brand new Linux operating system, Linpus Linux Lite, designed to empower the next billion PC customers. Linpus Linux Lite has a unique dual-mode user interface making it an easy way to start enjoying the opportunity of information. It also works on low cost hardware bringing the dream of buying a PC much closer for many people.

The two modes of the interface are Easy and Normal. Easy Mode, for people who are unfamiliar with a conventional PC interface, uses large colorful icons, intuitive groups and links; popular software is arranged under the headings: Internet, Work, Play, Learn, and Settings. Under the Internet tab there are links to Firefox Internet Browser, Google Maps, Wikipedia, You Tube, Messaging and FTP among others. Once users become more experienced they can then, by just tapping an icon on the lower tool bar switch to Normal mode, a traditional style PC interface.

Linpus Linux Lite runs on hardware with processing power as low as 366 MHz, 128MB of DRAM and 512MB of storage space, but has a full suite of open source productivity, multimedia, Internet, gaming and connectivity software. For example, Internet browser, 3D desktop, RSS reader, e-mail client, open office, instant messenger, webcam, photo management, media player, and games.

It also has support for Wi-Fi, HSDPA, HSUPA, Ethernet, and Bluetooth – and a range of peripherals including projectors. Boot-up time is twenty seconds.

“Our objective with this product was to create an operating system that offered both choice, and addressed specifically the ease-of-use needs of end users of UMPC devices,” said Linpus Technologies. “If you are using a small screen, if you are a child, older person or inexperienced user you will find the icon interface particularly helpful.”

Linpus Technologies has been a significant player in the world of Linux, particularly so in Greater China, for many years. Established more than ten years ago, Linpus have worked on Linux solutions for numerous important computer and telecommunications vendors. They are a top-three player in terms of Linux bundled notebooks – and the desktop distribution of choice of HP Taiwan.

“Our company has always been totally committed to creating user friendly mass market Linux. Because of this we have invested our time into not just being another desktop distribution, but in resolving all the issues involved in getting desktop Linux to market. Specifically we provide unprecedented levels of support for hardware vendors - and we recently pioneered our own preload solution, and have worked extremely hard to create stable sleep and suspend modes for notebooks,” added Linpus Technologies. “By having operating system, application and driver teams working side-by-side, in close proximity to the hardware manufacturers, we offer tremendous quality, value and time-to-market strengths. Ultimately, both the consumer and Linux enthusiasts benefit from a smooth, stable, out-of-the-box Linux operating system at the best price.”
