Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. Marconi to Address Maritime Conference on Improving Seaport Security With Next-Gen Communications Networks
Marconi expert to cite use of mission-critical networks for acquisition of real-time sensor data and improving agency response t

PITTSBURGH, March 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- A Marconi Corporation plc

(LONDON: MONI) expert in mission-critical communications networks for the transportation sector will speak Tuesday, March 22, at the 2005 International Congress on Maritime Security in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on how advanced information technology deployments can improve seaport security.

Shane McClelland, director of marketing for Marconi's Electronic Security and Surveillance group, will discuss, "Advanced Security Systems for Seaports: An Integrated Approach," on Tuesday, March 22, 5 p.m. McClelland will focus on how existing electronic security systems can be transformed to take advantage of the new, embedded intelligence available in the next generation of electronic security systems, including software-enabled video surveillance, wireless devices and biometrics.

Marconi has extensive global expertise in mission-critical network deployments for public transportation, providing integrated and networked communications systems to help these transportation agencies improve their security profile. Marconi networks support the addition of next-generation embedded intelligence in cameras, sensors and command-and-control infrastructure for surveillance, perimeter security and access-control systems. For additional information, please visit http://www.marconi.com/securitynetworks .

Marconi security and surveillance network deployments include an integrated system at Miami International Airport for perimeter security and surveillance, and access control. Seaport-related networks include Antwerp, supporting real-time video transmission, and the Panama Canal Commission, combining a variety of communications media into a single, integrated network that supports nine administrative and navigational buildings, more than 3,000 desktops and a Media Distribution facility with over 3,000 voice circuits.

McClelland will outline a communications architecture for public transportation agencies that implements integrated, advanced security systems over a networked infrastructure. He will identify and describe key system elements and discuss advantages and lessons learned from real-world implementations. McClelland is a former U.S. Air Force captain, where he was assigned to the Air Force Communications Command. He also supported the U.S. Government's Advanced Technology Demonstration Network (ATDNet) in a previous role at Marconi.

The conference, hosted by the Maritime Security Council, will be held March 21-23 at the Wyndham Airport Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. The Maritime Security Council is Technical Advisor to the U.S. State Department's Overseas Security Advisory Council on maritime security and also advises INTERPOL. The meetings provide a forum for law enforcement updates on maritime security issues and for presentations on the latest technology to improve maritime security.
