Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

Datalight Releases Industry's Fastest Flash File System Platform for Linux
Datalight Releases Industry's Fastest Flash File System Platform for Linux

NUREMBURG, Germany, Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Embedded World Conference -- With the dramatic rise of Linux in embedded systems, increased focus is being placed on the performance of flash memory in Linux devices like smart phones, cameras, MP3 players and industrial applications. Legacy flash file systems, such as JFFS2 and YAFFS2 are being tested and largely coming up short when it comes to performance. The Datalight platform for Linux, a combination of Datalight Reliance high-integrity file system and FlashFX Pro intelligent flash media manager, delivers up to 2000% faster write performance and 5 times faster mount speeds when compared to JFFS2.

The Datalight products will be the first ever modular flash file system platform for Linux, and the company reports strong demand by customers prior to release. One such customer, AMX, was given early access to the Datalight products, due to an aggressive production schedule that required a high-performance flash file system.

"I was skeptical of the performance numbers that Datalight was touting, but now that I've had a chance to try it myself, I have to say that I'm impressed," said Rick Gelling, Director of Firmware Engineering at AMX. "We're seeing performance well above what we experienced with alternative products, and the support and responsiveness from the Datalight team is keeping my project on track."

In addition to the significant performance advantage over alternatives, the Datalight flash File system platform for Linux also includes out-of-the-box support for 200+ flash parts from top memory manufacturers, enabling device manufacturers to get to market faster and save money when sourcing memory. Also included in the platform is a Windows driver that makes Datalight flash file system for Linux fully exchangeable with computers using the Microsoft Windows operating system.

The Datalight flash file system platform for Linux is now available worldwide. In addition to the new Linux versions, Datalight flash file system products are also available on leading commercial operating systems, including Microsoft Windows CE, Wind River VxWorks and Mentor Graphics NucleusPLUS.
