Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

Thirty-Five Percent of Government Workers Looking for a New Job this Year, According to CareerBuilder.com Survey
Thirty-Five Percent of Government Workers Looking for a New Job this Year, According to CareerBuilder.com Survey

CHICAGO, Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Thirty-five percent of government workers say they are ready to move on to a new job in 2005, according to a recent survey by CareerBuilder.com, the nation's largest online job network. While the majority of government workers say they are satisfied with their current jobs, one fourth say they are dissatisfied and looking for positions with higher pay and higher titles. The new CareerBuilder.com survey, "2005 Outlook: Government Workers," was conducted from November 22, 2004 to December 2, 2004 of more than 250 workers.

As is common in most industries, pay is often at the center of debate. Four-in-ten government workers report dissatisfaction with their current compensation. Although 64 percent received a raise last year, more than half of these workers received salary bumps of three percent or less.

"Competing with compensation levels in the private sector has always been a challenge for managers in the public sector," said Stan Paul, General Manager of CareerBuilder.com's Government Services. "Finding and keeping qualified government workers is especially important today because 32 percent of the federal workforce will be up for retirement in the next five years. Workers who are dedicated to a career in public service want more satisfactory compensation plus the ability to progress in their careers."

Some government workers point to a lack of competent leadership as a hindrance in achieving their desired goals and objectives. Thirty-four percent feel their supervisor is falling short in meeting employee needs. One fourth of these workers say they were overlooked for a promotion in 2004 and are ready to take advantage of impending vacancies to speed up their career progress.

Twenty-two percent of government workers admit to looking for a new job on a daily or weekly basis. CareerBuilder.com sees more than 900,000 job searches in government on its site every month.
