Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

Skyway Software Releases Eclipse Plug-In at JavaOne
Partnership Augments Skyway Software's Commitment to Open Standards, Scalable Platforms, and Software Development Flexibility

Skyway Software announced a strategic partnership with SpringSource. In this technology partnership, Skyway Software becomes an application-delivery ISV certified by SpringSource and integrates Spring into Skyway Visual Perspectives, its end-to-end application development and delivery tool. Skyway Software will resell SpringSource software and technical support subscriptions with Skyway Visual Perspectives. Also, Skyway Software extends its support of the Eclipse community with the release of Skyway Builder Community Edition (CE), an open source development set of plug-ins built for use within the Eclipse Framework.

Skyway Software & SpringSource
Skyway Visual Perspectives utilizes Eclipse to create a modeling solution for building and deploying Rich Internet Applications and Web Services. These models generate standard Java code that conforms to industry best practices on the Spring Framework and Spring MVC in a web-server-only runtime environment and/or in a full JEE container. The modeled solutions are equally portable across open-source infrastructure stacks or across diverse commercial infrastructure stacks.

"I am impressed with the ability of Skyway Visual Perspectives to build and deploy highly scalable Spring Framework applications quickly and easily. We look forward to working with Skyway Software and its powerful suite, Skyway Visual Perspectives, to further the pervasiveness of the Spring Framework as a standard within the IT community," said Rod Johnson, President and CEO of SpringSource.

Skyway Builder CE
With Skyway Builder CE, Java developers get an open source set of plug-ins for Eclipse that offer a seamless blend of coding and modeling for delivering Web Services and Web Applications in Spring. Skyway Builder CE was built to utilize several key Eclipse frameworks (Eclipse Modeling Framework and Java Persistence API Framework) and projects (Java Tools Project and Web Tools Project). Skyway Builder CE is easy to learn and use, extensible for individual or corporate use, transparent with full access to underlying code, and compatible with any open-source database and Web server.

Java developers and architects receive these usability benefits via Skyway Builder CE's core features, including:

  • Core development of projects, which include Web, service, and data layers for deployment (including data types, data stores, logic, services, operations, web controllers, events, and views)
  • Open-source deployment to MySQL, Postgres, and Derby databases
  • Open-source deployment to Tomcat and JBoss Web servers
"We are pleased to have Skyway Software as an Add-In member of the Eclipse Foundation and it's exciting to have them provide their expertise in model-driven development and deployment to our rapidly growing modeling ecosystem," said Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation, Inc. "Their new offering underscores the ease, extensibility, and familiarity developers can achieve by leveraging the Eclipse platform with innovative tools like Skyway Builder CE."

Skyway Builder CE now is available as a set of Eclipse plug-ins (for Eclipse v. 3.3.) or as a Rich Client Platform (RCP) version bundled with Eclipse RCP via Skyway Software's open source community located at www.skywayperspectives.org. When additional functionality is needed, users can upgrade to the commercial version of Skyway Visual Perspectives, which includes incident-based support, Skyway Builder Enterprise Edition for use with data objects from commercial databases -- including transaction management capability -- and Skyway Director for deploying Web Services and Rich Internet Applications to commercial JEE (EJB3) containers.

According to Sean Walsh, President and CEO of Skyway Software, "Today's announcement marks another milestone in Skyway Software's ongoing effort to simplify the software delivery process for our customers using open standards. The Spring Framework is a clear leader in application deployment today and we are honored to be the first development platform to be certified by SpringSource for developing and deploying services and applications to the Spring Framework. With Skyway Visual Perspectives, we very much want to help SpringSource expand the penetration of the Spring Framework. The Eclipse and Skyway Software partnership also is a great match because the Skyway Visual Perspectives plug-in relies extensively on the Eclipse frameworks and projects, so our existing customers and prospective customers who already rely on Eclipse will be very familiar with the new version of our tool."
