Microsoft Does Search Deal with HP; Pushes Yahoo Out

HP is Going to Pre-install a Silverlight-based Live Search-enabled Toolbar On All Consumer PCs it Ships in the US and Canada

HP, which has previously given the space to Yahoo, is going pre-install a Silverlight-based Live Search-enabled toolbar on all consumer PCs it ships in the US and Canada starting in January. That’s when the HP-Yahoo deal expires.

The default search engine in the IE browser will also be set to Microsoft Live Search.

Kevin Johnson, president of Platforms & Services at Microsoft, stated the obvious. “This is the most significant distribution deal for Live Search that Microsoft has ever done,” he said, calling it a “strategic indicator of our increased focus on securing broad-scale distribution for Live Search.”

There is no inkling of money changing hands but Microsoft is presumably paying HP like other search engines pay OEMs.

The Google-necessitated toolbar is supposed to give HP customization options like easy access to HP’s Snapfish online photo service and HP customer support.

Microsoft has a similar arrangement with Lenovo. Google’s got Firefox and Dell.
