Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

Citrix Replaces Sales Chief

DOJ Serving Subpoenas
The Justice Department has reportedly started issuing subpoenas as part of its coming antitrust review of the Google-Yahoo advertising deal.

Microsoft’s Sweetener
That Microsoft deal that Yahoo rejected Saturday guaranteed Yahoo $2.3 billion in annual search advertising revenues for the next five years, $19.5 billion-$26.5 billion over 10 years. Last month Microsoft offered $9 billion upfront and a guaranteed billion dollars a year in operating income over three years for its search interests.

One Million iPhones in 3 Days
Apple said Monday that it had sold a million of its new iPhone 3Gs over the weekend. The thing only went on sale last Friday morning. That means Apple sold four times as many of the new phone as its predecessor in its first three days but of course it’s got way more points of sale now. It’s selling in 21 countries. Nokia however sells 10 million phones a week and there were activation glitches with the new iPhone in the US. A lot of Apple stores are also out of stock.

Citrix Replaces Sales Chief
Citrix has tapped its VP of channels and emerging product sales Al Monserrat to replace its departing sales chief John Burris, who, as previously reported, is going to Sourcefire as CEO. A couple of years ago Monserrat was responsible for Citrix’ North American sales. Meanwhile, Citrix has named former PeopleSoft chief marketing officer and HP veteran Nanci Caldwell to its board.

Ex-HP VP Pleads Guilty
Ex-HP VP Atul Malhotra pleaded guilty last Friday to stealing trade secrets from IBM, his former employer. Remember? He’s the one who brought some confidential pricing information with him from IBM and offered it to his HP bosses. Now he’s looking at 10 years in jail and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is set for October 29. He was director of sales and business development at IBM Global Services for almost 10 years and briefly joined HP’s printer operation before being fired and turned over to the police.

Google To Anonymize User Data
In the name of user privacy, Google is going to anonymize YouTube user data and Internet addresses before turning it over under court order to Viacom, which is suing YouTube for a billion dollars for copyright infringement. The deal was cut by the parties’ lawyers.

Online Storage Start-up Gets $8m
Four-year-old Paris-based Steek SA, an online storage venture, has raised $8 million in second-round financing from AGT Private Equity, part of the Allianz Group, and existing backer Innovacom. It already had a $4 million A round in mid-2006. It claims 1.5 million users through 15 ISP and OEM partnerships. It wants to push into North America; it’s built a data center in Washington, DC and will stick with marketing through third parties.

Google Down
Last week, while we were on vacation, Google’s Documents and Spreadsheets service went down for 45 minutes according to Cnet, one of the hazards of web-based widgetry.
