In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

Paul Royal, Damballa's Principal Researcher, to Present at Black Hat USA 2008 on New Approaches in Malware Analysis

Damballa, Inc., the only Internet security company focused exclusively on targeted threats such as BotArmies, has announced that its Principal Researcher, Paul Royal, will speak at the Black Hat 2008 conference in Las Vegas, NV on August 6. Paul’s presentation will highlight an innovative, external approach to malware analysis.

Highly sophisticated malware – the increasingly common vehicle by which criminal organizations facilitate online crime – has become the centerpiece of many security threats on the Internet. Given the financially motivated nature of malware, methods of recovery from a compromise now require more than just simple remediation. There is a pronounced need and value for security practitioners to understand the intentions, actions and interactions of modern malware that exists independently of simple detection due to legal obligations of organizations to alert the public when illegal activities such as data exfiltration occur.

Paul’s talk, titled “Alternative Medicine: The Malware Analyst's Blue Pill," focuses on next-generation malware analysis technology that helps restore the good guys’ advantage in the ongoing arms race between criminals and information security practitioners. Based on novel applications of virtualization extensions, his techniques diverge from current malware analysis approaches that are often vulnerable to detection and attack.

WHO: As Principal Researcher at Damballa, Paul Royal collaborates with researchers and engineers to design new techniques for and apply ongoing research efforts in the implementation of sandboxes, sensors and analyzers used for the discovery and identification of behavior associated with compromised hosts. Paul received his Bachelor and Master of Science in Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2004 and 2006, respectively.
