Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

vmSight Releases User Activity Control for Desktop Virtualization
Blocks Unauthorized User Activity On Virtual Desktops with Patented Connector ID Technology

vmSight announced that its vmSight 3.5 product suite now includes a user activity control feature for virtual desktops that is in addition to its existing monitoring capabilities. This newly added capability allows virtual desktop administrators to block unauthorized user and application activity on virtual desktops for improved performance or security. The feature is available immediately in the vmSight virtual appliance that directly integrates into an organization’s virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) platform.

"vmSight now includes a unique 'call blocking' feature that halts unauthorized user activity on virtual desktops," said Jonathan Alexander, president and co-founder of vmSight. "With this release, vmSight moves beyond monitoring to control. This added functionality delivers yet another way for customers and Desktops-as-a-Service providers to increase the manageability of virtual desktops while decreasing administrative costs."

vmSight's patented Connector ID technology facilitates the new activity control functionality in release 3.5. Similar to the caller ID capability prevalent in today’s phone networks, vmSight's Connector ID enables virtual desktops and thin clients with a user identification and tracking capability. Using this technology, vmSight is the only solution of its kind with the ability to monitor users and prevent unauthorized application activity for performance or security purposes. Administrators can identify the specific virtual desktop and applications accessed by a user at any given time, and can track, control and optimize user activity and performance end-to-end.

"In our environment, hosting critical business services for our clients, it's imperative that we have a solution that provides identity management, access control and audit, and is aligned with our vision for virtual desktops," stated Joel Friedman, CSO at DataPipe, a leading managed service and hosting provider. "vmSight's user activity control, combined with its monitoring and reporting, exactly fits our needs."

As part of the company's vmSight 3.5 product suite for virtual desktop deployments, user activity control integrates completely with the vmSight Center and Monitoring Stations. User activity is monitored in real-time, and unauthorized user or application activity can be blocked for improved performance or security. Integration with Active Directory and LDAP allows policy definition based on existing user groups. Combined with its other features, such as performance monitoring and service level management, vmSight 3.5 provides a complete virtual desktop management solution to help reduce problems and support costs.
