COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More Ohio newspapers
are adding their voices to the chorus urging voters to reject Issue 6 on
Tuesday's statewide ballot.
This week, The Morning Journal of Lorain said, "Even if you would like to
see casinos in Ohio some day, the Issue 6 casino proposal on the Nov. 4 ballot
deserves your 'no' vote. It is a bad deal for Ohioans."
The newspaper joined many others in the state, including the daily papers
in Ohio's eight largest cities: The Blade of Toledo, The Columbus Dispatch,
The Cincinnati Enquirer, The Plain Dealer of Cleveland, Akron Beacon Journal,
Dayton Daily News, The Vindicator of Youngstown and The Repository of Canton
in opposing the issue.
Among many other newspapers urging "no on 6" votes are The Courier of
Findlay, Mansfield News Journal, Marion Star, Tiffin Advertiser-Tribune,
Coshocton Tribune, Zanesville Times Recorder, Newark Advocate and Chillicothe
Gazette. In addition, two of the state's major business newspapers - Business
First of Columbus and Crain's Cleveland Business - have editorialized in
opposition to Issue 6.
The newspapers agreed that a monopoly casino owned by private interests
should not be adopted by voters and placed in the Ohio Constitution.
"We are gratified by the sweep of Ohio's daily newspapers," said Bob
Tenenbaum, spokesman for the No on 6 Committee. "We don't know of any daily
newspaper in Ohio that is in favor of Issue 6. Ohio's newspapers clearly see
that giving private businesses a monopoly on a casino in the state of Ohio is
a huge give-away of millions of dollars."
Many of the editorials also cited a report by the Ohio Department of
Taxation that a loophole in the proposed amendment means the casino could pay
zero in taxes if a Native American tribe opened a casino. A dozen tribes have
petitioned the federal government for recognition in Ohio.
Issue 6 is opposed by Governor Ted Strickland, U.S. Sens. George Voinovich
and Sherrod Brown, Ohio House Speaker Jon Husted, Ohio Senate President Bill
Harris, the Ohio League of Women Voters, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, the
Fraternal Order of Police of Ohio, a major national union representing casino
workers, the Ohio Racing Commission, and other state leaders and
organizations.
