Humana's Bruce Goodman to Join CIO Hall of Fame
CIO magazine inducts Bruce J. Goodman for outstanding leadership in information technology

CIO magazine has chosen Bruce J. Goodman, Humana Inc.s (NYSE: HUM) senior vice president and chief service and information officer, as a 2008 inductee into the magazines Hall of Fame. Goodman is one of 12 honorees selected this year for profoundly shaping the technology-enabled business landscape and for significant contributions to the technology profession.

Since joining Humana in 1999, Goodman has focused on technology innovation and broad service improvement initiatives. These efforts have helped create a proactive, value-added service experience for Humanas 11.7 million health-plan members. He is being recognized for creative vision, practical leadership and advancing the role of the CIO throughout his four-decade career, according to the magazine.

Bruce has developed a strong, vibrant leadership team at Humana and a committed organization that proactively focuses on what technology can do to advance our business, said Michael B. McCallister, Humanas president and chief executive officer. He and his team have helped Humana become the technology leader in the health-benefits industry by providing our consumers with much-needed actionable information.

In almost 40 years as a technology executive, I have always believed that the CIO should be a strategic partner with business, Goodman said. But beyond technology leadership, Ive seen my role as developing an environment that rewards risk-taking, with the right structures in place to evaluate and capitalize on opportunities. Im proud to be part of a company that has done that over the past decade while actively building a culture of associate engagement.

Goodmans accomplishments at Humana include:

  • Leading Humanas successful joint venture with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Inc. to form Availity, LLC, an Internet-based multi-payor physicians portal
  • Implementing SmartSummary®, the nations first in-depth, monthly benefits summary tailored specifically to individual health plan members
  • Innovating with technology and process re-engineering to drive consumer engagement in health decision-making, for which Humana has won a number of industry awards

According to Abbie Lundberg, editor-in-chief of CIO magazine, The CIO Hall of Fame recognizes an individuals contributions to the field of information technology and its role in making business work better. These men and women have helped educate and inspire peers, as well as the next generation of information technology leaders.

Goodman is one of only 44 individuals who have been inducted into the CIO Hall of Fame since its founding in 1997.
