Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

CNET Posts 24 Percent Increase in Unique Users Following CNET Redesign Announced in August
Shift to open architecture creates CNET platform that drives traffic

CNET has reported a 24 percent increase in unique users year-over-year (CNET Internal Log Data, October 2007 vs. October 2008). The traffic increase comes two months after the launch of the CNET redesign, a complete evolution of the website that spanned everything from its logo, design, and navigation to the delivery of product reviews, tech news, and original video programming.

The increase highlights the impact of the site's new "open in and open out" architecture, which makes it easier for CNET to export its content to all corners of the web, as well as import content from vendors and competitive news and review sites.

Over the past year, CNET has developed and launched a variety of features that take advantage of its "open in and open out" architecture and put the latest tech information right at the user's fingertips, including:

  • Branded Showcases: CNET's Branded Showcases provides and integrates vendor content right down to the specific makes and models of products across hundreds of categories. The vendor content sits alongside CNET's editorial coverage of popular categories like TVs, digital cameras, and computers.
  • Product Reviews from Around the Web: CNET incorporates hundreds of reviews from external sites to complement its own editorial reviews.
  • CNET Blog Network: CNET currently has more than 30 bloggers contributing to its site, providing expert opinions and perspective on topics including open source, computer chip technology, and military tech.
  • Five-Star Rating: The new detailed, 10-point analysis allows consumers to quickly compare other products while they browse through the reviews and rate more products under a system they are familiar with.
  • Product Reviews: Detailed and up-close photos and/or video accompany every review, so people know what to expect when they purchase a tech gadget.
  • API for developer community: CNET's content is open and easily accessible to the developer community - giving them the ability to create widgets and import content to enhance their own sites with CNET content.
  • CNET TV: With more than 40 videos created each week, CNET TV continues to produce original video programming focusing on technology. The site also features video content from Revision3, and syndicates its video content to partners like TiVo, Cablevision and Univision.
