SAN CLEMENTE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/05/09 -- We all have them: those skinny jeans we vowed to fit back into and wear again one day. They hang in the back of the closet or are tucked away in a drawer collecting dust following years of excess and weight gain. According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than half of U.S. adults do not get enough physical activity.(1) So getting the body moving and eating right continues to be the top New Year's resolution. For 2009, the California Milk Processor Board (CMPB), the creator of GOT MILK?, has teamed up with Jason Walsh, trainer to the stars, to help Californians get that fresh start. Walsh, who trains the likes of Jessica Biel and Sophia Bush, says the secret to a stronger, leaner and higher-performing body is exercise and proper nutrition that includes low fat or nonfat milk -- tips he outlines exclusively on www.gotmilk.com. Walsh, who earned a B.A. degree in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is an expert in fitness and nutrition. Walsh's education included coursework in kinesiology, physiology and biomechanics. He holds two top-level certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT). An avid milk drinker, Walsh encourages substituting low fat or nonfat milk for sodas and other sugary drinks as part of a daily diet. "Jason Walsh has the background and knowledge to make New Year's resolutions come true," says Steve James, executive director of the CMPB. "He is a great partner in getting the CMPB's health message across the Golden State -- exercise and nutrition that includes skim or low fat milk can help maintain healthy weight." Walsh says eating a well-balanced diet is key to maintaining healthy weight, with green leafy vegetables such as spinach and broccoli, lean protein like chicken and salmon, complex carbohydrates like whole wheat and the drink of choice, low fat or nonfat milk. Walsh says chocolate milk is also an important part of one's daily workout regimen. In fact, studies have shown that chocolate milk competes effectively with commercial sports drinks when it comes to muscle recovery when taken 30 minutes after exercise. "I am a firm believer in putting natural products in the body," says Walsh. "Milk contains whey protein, calcium and Vitamin D to maintain muscle mass and to strengthen bones. Milk is as natural as it gets." Just as important as consuming the proper food, Walsh encourages his clients to get the heart pumping and the body moving. Sedentary lifestyles can lead to increased health risks such as obesity and diabetes. According to a 2007 report by the CDC, about 66 percent of adults in the United States are overweight or obese and this number is rising.(2) In addition, the American Diabetes Association states that two and a half million Latinos age 20 and older have diabetes and one in three Hispanics is obese. That's why Walsh has outlined key steps on www.gotmilk.com to help Californians start the New Year right with exercise tips that include: 1) At least 30 minutes of cardiovascular activity and weight training followed by a glass of chocolate milk for proper muscle recovery 2) Exercises such as squats, lunges and push ups to work different muscles in the body 3) Recovery through proper sleep, stretching and eating a balanced diet that includes low fat or nonfat milk To obtain Walsh's nutrition and exercise tips for the New Year, visit www.gotmilk.com. It also links to the Dairy Council of California web site, which provides a three-week Nutrition and Fitness Challenge so that Californians do not feel alone in this new venture to health. About the CMPB The California Milk Processor Board was established in 1993 to make milk more competitive and increase milk consumption in California. Awareness of GOT MILK? is over 90% nationally and it is considered one of the most important and successful campaigns in history. GOT MILK? is a federally registered trademark that has been licensed by the national dairy boards since 1995. The CMPB's Spanish-language campaign began in 1994 using the tagline "Familia, Amor y Leche" (Family, Love and Milk). The TOMA LECHE (Drink Milk) campaign replaced it in 2006, following a growing trend in Hispanic food advertising that uses wit and humor to reach audiences. GOT MILK? gifts and recipes can be viewed at www.gotmilk.com and www.tomaleche.com.
