Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. For me, it is all of those things plus a time when I u...

InterSystems Spotlights Winners of 2009 Innovator Awards
InterSystems develops and markets innovative integration, database, and business intelligence software products

InterSystems Corporation today announced the winners of its annual worldwide Innovator Awards competition. The awards honor and encourage development of innovative solutions that utilize one or more of InterSystems’ software products. Entries were received from a large field of developers in 13 countries and the submissions were judged by an independent panel of IT industry experts. The awards were presented at InterSystems DEVCON2009 customer conference.

InterSystems develops and markets innovative integration, database, and business intelligence software products.

Innovators in Action
Top honors went to Press Computer Systems LTD. (PCS), www.presscomputers.com, for Knowledge, a media publishing and content management system. The company, based in the United Kingdom, used InterSystems CACHÉ® and InterSystems Ensemble® to build a high-performance application that provides automatic associations for related content and creates intelligent workflows for easier, faster, and richer multimedia publication. “The judgment of third-party industry experts and receiving the Innovator Award are proof that we’ve developed world-class software,” said Phillip Walker, PCS Managing Director.

Lead Horse Technologies, Inc., www.leadhorsetech.com, a health IT company headquartered in Junction City, Kansas, received the second-place InterSystems Innovator Award for its Medloom decision support system. Medloom is an adverse drug event query tool and safety surveillance application that can deliver relevant results even when the search term is not found in available sources. For example, a search for “liver failure” will also return results for the term “hepatic insufficiency”. Lead Horse selected CACHÉ as the database platform for its decision support application because CACHÉ has the ability to efficiently handle the large volume and high complexity of the queries that Medloom will receive. “This award is a welcome validation of Medloom’s capacity to reduce the costs and magnitude of adverse drug reactions in this country and others,” said Dr. John M. Armstrong, Lead Horse CEO.

Winning the third-place InterSystems Innovator Award was CommuniCare Tecnologia em Informática, www.comunicare-ti.com.br. Based in Porto Alegre, Brazil, CommuniCare was recognized for its Connectivity ICIS information system for hospital intensive care units (ICUs). Connectivity uses CACHÉ capabilities to consolidate information from diverse sources, including bedside instruments, to provide up-to-date information on the status of each patient, enabling ICU physicians to improve care delivery. The Connectivity application includes order entry, clinical decision support, and personal health record modules and delivers information to a wide variety of medical devices used by clinicians. “We’re very proud of this award,” said Luís Henrique Petkovicz, Director of CommuniCare. “It validates our software design decisions as the reason for the success we’ve had in helping doctors deliver better care in the ICU.”

“It is a great pleasure every year to recognize the exceptionally innovative projects that are conceptualized and developed by InterSystems customers all over the world,” said Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning.
