Richard Davies wrote: The UK has a good crop of technology pioneers in cloud computing - for example ElasticHosts, FlexiScale, Flexiant, OnApp - and also some strong government initiatives such as G-Cloud. We will have to see whether this kind of technical leadership converts into swift mass-market adoption or not.

In many cases, the end of the year gives you time to step back and take stock of the last 12 months. This is when many of us take a hard look at what worked and what did not, complete performance reviews, and formulate plans for the coming year. Majority of Americans Did Not Pay Attention to Bank Stress Tests; Vast Majority Say Results Don't Affect Views of Their Bank, New KRC Research Study Reveals

WASHINGTON, May 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Most Americans paid little or no attention to the U.S. Treasury Department's recently completed "stress test" of the nation's 19 largest banks. An even greater majority said the results won't affect how they view their own bank. These findings come from data released today by KRC Research, an international market research firm.

According to the poll conducted May 8-10, 55% of the American public paid "little or no attention" to the stress test and "the process undertaken by the U.S. Treasury Department to determine the ability of these banks to weather potential future economic downturns."

A vast majority, 70% of those who paid at least a little attention to the stress tests, said the results of the stress test did not change their view of their bank, and 88% said they were "not that likely or not at all likely" to change banks as a result of the test. Also, a clear majority (57%) say the results did not change their opinion of banks in general.

"Americans may have some issues with the banking industry, but this survey shows conclusively that they have not lost confidence in their personal banks," said Peter Shafer, CEO of KRC Research. "While the financial community eagerly awaited the stress test results, everyone else continued business as usual, including trusting and using their local bank."

When it comes to hearing information about their banks, nearly twice as many Americans trust their own banks over the government as sources of information. The vast majority of Americans most trust information from their banks (58%) versus information from state regulators (14%) or the U.S. Treasury (13%).

In terms of the overall economy, while there was a split on whether "it is getting better" (39%) versus "the worst is yet to come" (35%), there was a consensus on worry about the job market with 82% of those who paid at least a little attention to the stress tests saying they believe unemployment will eventually rise above 10%.

In fact, a majority (52%) of those that paid at least a little attention to the stress test process think that conducting the tests was a good idea.

Study Methodology: KRC Research conducted 1000 telephone interviews with a random sample of American adults from May 8 to 10, 2009. The margin of error for the sample is +/-3.1 percentage points. Data were weighted to match U.S. Census results on age, gender, region, race/ethnicity, and education.
