HDT Engineering Services Discusses the Future of Prosthetic Capabilities

FREDERICKSBURG, Va., May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Experts from HDT Engineering Services (previously known as New World Associates), a world-class engineering and product development provider to military and homeland security markets, recently participated in a live interview with Arlington, Va.-based News Channel 8.

The prime-time discussion centered on the future of robotics and prosthetic technology and its potential impact on the lives of amputees, particularly members of the U.S. military injured on the battlefield. During the program, Dr. Tom Van Doren, Vice President of HDT Engineering Services, provided News Channel 8 anchor Dave Lucas a glimpse into the future of this technology by demonstrating the revolutionary capabilities of the Proto 2 Prosthetic Arm.

The Proto 2 Prosthetic Arm was developed through a unique team of universities and public and private organizations, including Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL), which led the project, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), which provided the funding.

HDT played a key role by providing the engineering expertise that helped advance the initial prosthetic prototype into a strong, lightweight arm with 20 degrees of freedom that can mimic the movement and strength of a natural limb and allow the user to have a sense of touch, temperature and spatial location.
