NEW YORK CITY LANDLORDS' VERSION OF PONZI SCHEME
NEW YORK, May 26 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- City Council Candidate Aaron Fraser will be asking Local and Federal authorities to look into what he believes amounts to a Ponzi scheme.
"New York City Landlords are charging tenants exorbitant amounts of rent for illegally converted apartments," says Aaron Fraser, "and there appears to be widespread abuse of the Mitchell-Llama Tax exemptions and not abiding by the Mitchell Lama rental guide lines. Some landlords are neglecting to register their buildings with the DHCR so there are no records as to how much rent should be paid for each unit. Landlords are also sending section 8 residents to real-estate agents who charge massive fees for their apartment finding services.
One such Landlord, of 1380 University Avenue in the Bronx, has been charging tenants for electricity as part of their rent, even though he has not paid the electric bill in years. This amounts to fraudulent charges on the part of the landlord for services that he has not been providing. To date, this landlord is 141,820.21 dollars in arrears to Con-Edison. Potentially, this could result in hundreds of millions of dollars in monies being owed to tenants across the city who were victims of unscrupulous landlords.
In order to address these issues, residents of 1380 University Avenue, along with other victimized citizens, will be demonstrating at City Hall on May 28, 2009 at 11:00 A.M., asking Mayor Bloomberg, Elected officials and The Bronx District Attorney to look into the matter.
We are also asking all concerned citizens, community activists, potential candidates, clergy and Political Action Committees to attend the event.
