Cloudera, the Hadoop start-up with the glitterati backers that's going mano a mano with Amazon over who's gonna have the dominant commercial Hadoop implementation, is now going Amazon one better and supporting Amazon's Elastic Block Store (EBS) storage, something Amazon's S3-bound Elastic MapReduce doesn't do - at least not yet.

That means that Cloudera's version of the open source take on MapReduce is undercutting Elastic MapReduce.

Integrating with EBS should translate into a significant cost saving on storage compared to S3 by removing the requirement to send data back and forth across the S3 toll road for every job.

The costs of transferring data to and from S3 can run 17 cents a gigabyte a month and the cost of storing both raw data and the aggregate results can run 15 cents a gigabyte a month.

Cloudera says it should also improve performance by enabling more disks per node compared to EC2, which provides a fixed number of local disks per instance. EBS is also designed to be highly available and reliable with volume data replicated across multiple servers to prevent loss.

EBS volumes currently top out at 1TB and run 10 cents per allocated gigabyte a month, plus 10 cents per one million I/O request.
